Knights slay the Eagles
Week nine of the NBS Men’s league saw four teams take to the court, first the Eagles and the Knights, then the Nomads and the Checkers.
The Knights handed the Eagles a surprising defeat, beating them 100 - 95.
The Eagles looked set for the win in the first quarter with a 13 point lead, but the Knights had narrowed that gap to one by half time, and zero by the third quarter with both teams at 72.
Several Eagles players received fouls which decided the match, a lesson to be learned for their next game.
The Knights also sunk three-pointer after three pointer over the match.
Knights’ Newel Buenafe scored 27 points, seven of these from three-pointers, and Archie Nijjar followed with 24 points.
The Eagles’ Marc Juntilla took 27 points and six steals, and their top point scorer was Emiliano Guerra with 33 points.
Game two between the Nomads and Checkers saw the Checkers take all with 92 - 79.
Things were tight in the first half with the Checkers’ lead staying within a five-point margin.
But the third quarter proved decisive and they took a 10 point lead over the Nomads, a lead that stayed secure until the end.
The Nomads fought for the win despite missing key player Riley Sa, and it unfortunately wasn’t enough.
On the other side of the court, Fotu Hala was absent from the Checkers’ line up.
The top point-scorer for the match was Checkers’ Kamal Larry, with 28. Pip JOhnston took 22, and Nomads’ Nick Fechney took 21.
