Rebrand changes nothing, says Meager

Rebrand changes nothing, says Meager
National candidate James Meager.

National’s James Meager says the Government’s Three Waters rebrand changes nothing for Mid Canterbury.
The Rangitata candidate said the reworking of the reforms has been a waste of time and money for similar results.
“Local water assets are still being confiscated from local councils and handed over to unaccountable regional entities,” Meager said.
“The Ashburton District Council is still losing ownership and control of assets that its ratepayers have paid for over decades.
“Those locals still have no say over what rates they will pay and what infrastructure they want to invest in.”
With $94m already spent on the Three Water reforms, Meager said it is “a kick in the guts” for high-performing, responsible local councils which have invested heavily in water infrastructure for many years.
National will still repeal and repair the reforms with its Local Water Done Well alternative if elected in November, he said.
“We will restore council ownership and control over assets, and provide new funding options for those local councils who need help to pay for upgraded water infrastructure.”
