Tomorrow the Ashburton Art Gallery and Museum is launching a brand new website, Whakatere Heritage Collections Online, which contains more than 1000 photographs and records from the Ashburton Museum & Historical Society Inc’s collections and the Ashburton District Council's historical archives.

Both collections include photographs, archives and objects from across the district that are cared for by the museum. Many more images and records will be added to the website over time for people across Aotearoa and the world to discover Whakatere Ashburton’s unique heritage.

The Whakatere Heritage Collections Online launch event will take place at the AM&HS bi-monthly meeting at 2pm, Sunday, May 5. It will include tutorials in how to search the collections website effectively, and those involved with this project from Ashburton Museum and AM&HS will be speaking.

The launch event will also look back at how far cataloguing has come at Ashburton Museum since the days before computers and collection management software, and look forward to the possibilities and potential for making this online collection even more accessible in future.

For now, here is a sneak peek at some of the images that will soon be available on Whakatere Heritage Collections Online, which includes photographs taken by talented former Ashburton Guardian photographers.
