Crossing crash raises concerns
A pedestrian crash has raised concerns about the Ashburton CBD.
First responders were called to a crossing on East and Burnett Street around midday on Monday after a vehicle struck a pedestrian.
The victim sustained serious injuries and was transported to Christchurch hospital. They are now recovering at home, police said.
“There are many reasons for road crashes,” Canterbury police Aoraki area commander Vicki Walker said.
“Police encourage all road users to share the road to stay safe. This includes pedestrians and cyclists, alongside vehicles.
“Pedestrians should always take care and look before crossing the road, and motorists should also look out for people crossing.”
She reminded road users to drive to the conditions, maintain a safe speed and remove distractions while behind the wheel.
Ashburton District Council told the Guardian they were waiting for a police incident report and would “respond as appropriate,” to any recommendations.
“The pedestrian crossing is in accordance with the relevant guidance and was installed as part of the revitalisation of the CBD four years ago,” infrastructure and open spaces general manager Neil McCann said.
